Ambalapuzha Temple History:

According to history, Lord Krishna once visited the monarch of Ambalapuzha’s palace. He pretended to be a sage. In a game of chess, Lord Krishna challenged the king. The saint requested only a few rice grains from the king as a winning fee.

Lord Krishna desired the same amount of grains as a chessboard. One grain of rice had to go in the first square, two in the second square, four in the third square, eight in the fourth square, sixteen in the fifth square, and so on until you reach the last court. Since the king lost the game, he should give the sage a bowl of equal rice.

He began to calculate the overall amount of rice and discovered that it was in the millions. This gift proved impossible to provide. As a result, the monarch was in a precarious position. Lord Krishna finally came in his natural form. He requested that the king offer Paal payasam to the devotees daily until he cleared the debt. As a result, serving Paal payasam at the temple began.
